In 2015, Rocky Asbury hung up his baseball cleats for a paint brush and canvas. Being a top baseball prospect his whole life and playing baseball at a high level for many years he was in disbelief when he discovered his talent for art. To this day, Rocky still has moments where he doesn’t understand where it came from or how it got there but embraces the fact he has it.
As an Artist, Rocky has heard so many different explanations of “art” which raises the questions…self taught artist vs. art school major, technique vs. skill, brush vs. spray can or color vs. black & white???
Rocky shares it’s not about where or how you learned the mastery of art, it’s about enticing the senses and making a connection with the emotion of the painting. The goal behind each piece is to capture the imagination of the audience and draw them in. Rocky follows no rules or guidelines in creating his art work. Rocky mashes up several techniques to encapsulate one eye catching piece of art. Rocky incorporates many different elements into each piece such as gold leaf, resin, broken glass, brushes, paper towels, scrapers, squeegees and much more .Rocky searches 1000’s of pictures that capture emotion rather than plain beauty. Sometimes a picture will sit for months waiting for the right background canvas to choose it. Once the photo and canvas have been joined together they live happily ever after.
